Robert Burns, (1759-96) left behind a remarkable body of work ranging from satirical poetry to to tender love songs. His status as the national bard is unchallenged and an official Burns Heritage Trail leads visitors around sights in southwest Scotland where he lived. Alloway, just south of Ayr, is the real centre of the Burns Trail. The Tam O'Shanter Experience is a contemporary film and video centre based on his poem about witches. Burns' Cottage, the poet's birthplace, houses memorabilia and a collection of manuscripts. The ruins of Alloway Kirk and the 13th century Brig o'Doon have the best period atmosphere. Robert Burns' father and mother are buried in the local cemetary. Further round the coast from Ayr, near the town of Maybole, is the neo-classical re-modelled Culzean Castle by architect Robert Adam. Restored in the 1970's, the grounds became Scotland's first public country park in 1969 and with farming flourishing alongside ornamental gardens, they reflect both the leisure and everyday activities of life on a great country estate. For golfers, Troon and Turnberry are big name courses within around 40 minutes drive from the Millbrae apartments. Note also that no-frills airline Ryanair flys into Prestwick which is around 30 minutes from the apartments. There are excellent deals from London and to Dublin.
